How to Use Your Knives Safely

TOP 10 KNIFE SAFETY TIPS

Handling a knife can be dangerous if you do not follow certain safety rules!

Know what you should or shouldn’t do while using your knives:

1. You shouldn’t keep your knives loose in a drawer;

Why?

You are more likely to cut yourself while looking for one.

2. Make sure your knives are always sharp and in good condition;

Why?

A dull knife requires more pressure to cut, so you are more likely to hurt yourself.

3. You shouldn’t use the knife with wet or greasy hands;

Why?

Your hands will not grip well to the handle material, and there is a greater chance of losing control of the knife, or even slip from your hands.

4. You should hold knives firmly and move them as far away from the body as possible while cutting.

When cutting, you must protect the tips of your fingers by holding the food with your hand like a "claw".

Professionals are recommended to use protective gloves and apron.

Why?

This gives you more control over the knife and prevents accidents.

5. It’s preferable to use a cutting board instead of cutting food by holding it in your hands. To prevent the board from slipping, place a towel underneath it, to obtain more grip and prevent it from moving;

Why?

Because we must give preference to methods that do not put us at risk.

6. While using a knife, you should keep it clearly visible on the work surface, and put it down with the edge always facing away from your work area;

Why?

It’s the safest way to protect yourself and anyone who may be sharing the same work space.

7. Never try to catch a falling knife. Stay as far away as you can;

Why?

A falling knife is unpredictable and can seriously injure you.

8. Wash and dry the blade from the back to the edge;

Why?

There is less chance of an accident.

9. If you need to transport/carry knives, don’t do it unless they have their blade secured with a protective case. If you’re just going to walk with the knife in your hands, carry it on your side, and do it with the tip facing down;

10. Keep the knives out of the reach of children;

Why?

For all the obvious reasons. Children shouldn’t handle knives without supervision. A moment of distraction may be enough for the child to be hurt, or to hurt others, severely.
